Garden affection sparks insurance reminder

A new study has revealed that Britons are heavily attached to their gardens, sparking a reminder for homeowners to ensure their gardens are protected by insurance.
Only nine per cent of Britons could live without their garden, research from Norwich Union Equity Release has revealed.
In addition, the public is expending great time and effort in looking after and enjoying their pride and joy, with eight million people spending an average of an hour a day in their garden.
Commenting on the findings of the study, Nigel Spencer, of Norwich Union, said: "Gardens are clearly still at the heart of British homes, not least among the older generation, 51 per cent of whom say they are proud of their gardens and want them to look nice.
"Maintaining a beautiful garden can be a labour of love that takes up an enormous amount of time, effort and money."
This affection for the outdoors reflects the need for Britons to ensure their home insurance adequately protects the contents of their gardens.
According to a recent study, the British public spends an annual £15 billion on their garden, yet 83 per cent are unaware as to whether this expenditure is protected by their home insurance premiums.
Approximately 3.4 million people have been victims of garden theft.
