Honda to launch in-store motorbike simulator

Honda is hoping to introduce a motorcycle simulator in all its showrooms, in a bid to improve riders' understanding of the dangers and joys of motorbike riding. Honda has been attempting to introduce simulators for the last 16 years, although previous models were either inefficient or overly costly. When the company became the only manufacturer to sign the European Road Safety Charter in 2004, it decided it wanted to produce a reliable simulator to use throughout Europe. Its new Motorcycle Riding Trainer will be tested in the UK next year, before being rolled out to the remaining showrooms over the following three years. The trainer is essentially a standard PC linked to a life-size motorbike model with controls, including handlebars, clutch, throttle, front brake lever, pedals, gear lever and rear brake. Its rider will be able to see a three-dimensional image of a biker on the screen in front of them, along with realistic sounds and images. The system can train novices on the basics of motorbike riding, as well as giving accurate feedback on what even experienced riders did wrong or right. It is hoped the system will cut down on the number of novice drivers on the roads, who are often unaware of how much danger they are in.
