Transport for London's (TfL) Road Safety Team will be at hand at this year's MCN London Motorcycle Show at Alexandria Palce this year, in an attempt to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes on London's roads. The MCN London Motorcycle Show is the south-east's biggest biking event and runs until February 5th 2006. At the event the Road Safety Team will be there to offer motorcycle riders guidance on the law, hazards to watch out for and general safety tips. Recent statistics show that despite motorcycles, mopeds and scooters making up just 2.5 per cent of London's traffic, two wheeled vehicles represent more than 16 per cent of all traffic-related injuries. Janet Kirrage, TfL's London road safety education manager, said: "Motorcycle riders are at a real risk when they manoeuvre through slow-moving or stopped traffic. Although not illegal, 'filtering' can be highly dangerous as car drivers often do not see motorcyclists when they are weaving in and out of traffic. 'Filtering' often results in three common forms of collisions, namely head-on collisions, hitting traffic islands and crashes into the side of other vehicles. Ms Kirrage added: "These collisions are preventable and we want the message to get across." Meanwhile, illustrating TfL's message concerning preventable road deaths, a motorcyclist who recorded the fastest speed ever on British roads died after crashing his bike. Lee Beddis, who was once recorded speeding at 155 miles per hour died in September 2005 after crashing his bike into the back of another car at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour.
