Authorities clamp down on mini motos

Local councils and police in the south west are clamping down on riders of mini motos being driven illegally in public spaces. Mini motos are reduced scale motorbikes, often ridden by children, but capable of speeds up to 50 mph. However, few owners realise that they are legally considered road going vehicles and require the same paperwork as larger bikes. But only a tiny minority are actually covered by licences, motor insurance or tax. In a bid to cut down on serious injuries some local councils are now confiscating mini motos found being ridden in public without documentation, and may even destroy them in extreme cases. A police spokesman said: "We have powers to seize these machines which pose a nuisance and a danger to riders, pedestrians and other road users." "It is illegal to use goped or mini-moto bikes on public roads. "They are vehicles, as classified under law, and the normal legal documentation, including licence, motor insurance, and tax is required, and a helmet must be worn," he added. However, legitimate drivers looking for cheap mini moto insurance should shop around to find the best deal, particularly online as many providers offer a discount for buying via the internet.
