Drivers urged to look out for motorbikes

The weather may still give us cause to doubt it, but it is now definitely spring and that means more motorcyclists taking the roads, and statistically, that means a greater risk of accidents on the roads. Historic data shows that two thirds of all accidents involving motorbikes take place between April and September, according to Northamptonshire police. The force is urging local bikers to check their machines before taking to the roads if they have not ridden them over the winter months. Fatalities in accidents involving bikers have fallen in recent years, with 35 fewer killed in Northamptonshire last year than in 2003, but there is still considerable cause for concern. "We are asking all road users to be more alert and bikers especially to avoid speeding, dangerous manoeuvres and risky overtaking", a spokeswoman for the police told the BBC. "We're pleased at the reduction, but are still concerned about riders. "
