As the summer weather arrives and people get ready for the barbecue season homeowners across the country will be looking forward to enjoying their gardens. But few people clearly have no idea of the replacement cost of garden items such as plants and furniture, as many do not insure the contents of their garden on their home contents policy. Research from Saga revealed that 82 per cent of prospective house buyers consider the garden to be the most important feature of a house, which is why owners are willing to spend so much to have their garden looking perfect. Meanwhile, nine per cent of people said that either their children or grandchildren had damaged their garden, while a survey from Gardening Which? suggested that 1.6 million gardens have been broken into, with 60,000 gardens vandalised. But with the contents of the average garden now standing at £738, homeowners are urged to check precisely what their home contents policy covers. Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, said: "Gardens can really enhance the look of a house indeed our recent research shows that 82 per cent of people regard the garden as the most important feature when house-hunting. "People often invest a great deal of time and money on sprucing up their garden, which is why it makes sense to protect your garden and equipment from theft or damage."
