Registration of new bikes in the UK fell by some 13 per cent during April, partially due to the soaring cost of petrol in the UK, according to the latest figures from the MCI. There were 10,480 registrations of two wheeled vehicles in April 2006, down from the 12,005 recorded in April 2005. Mopeds and scooters recorded the greatest fall, with sales of those under 50cc plunging 21 per cent to 1,487 units registered, compared with 1,893 in April 2005. Total scooter sales also fell by 21 per cent to 2,681 units. By contrast sales of motorbikes fell by 13 per cent, while sales in the Touring, Trail/Enduro and Supersports classes all recording major declines, largely attributed to the record cost of petrol in the UK. The top selling motorcycle of 2006 so far has been the Yamaha R6, with 872 units sold. The top selling tourer is the BMW R1200GS, while the CG125 Honda ranks top among commuter motorbikes. Meanwhile, the registration of "unspecified" two-wheeled vehicles was also down, by 45 per cent according to the MCI.
