Scottish police in motorbike safety initiative

Borders and Lothian police are focussing a road safety initiative on motorbikes, after accident rates continue to cause concern. Though motorbike accidents and injuries were halved compared to last year in the area of the Scottish borders, the number of fatal incidents involving motorbikes are still high, according to the police. Police are initiating a campaign that will run from May 15th to October 1st that will focus on educating motorbike riders about safe driving. The campaign will focus mainly on the Scottish borders, where police theorise that there is a feeling of minimal police presence on the roads that in turn leads to dangerous driving. Inspector Colin Shillito of Lothian and Borders road policing unit said: "It is a mistake to think that rural roads are any less dangerous than city roads and that it is acceptable to ride motorcycles or drive full throttle along them. "The majority of road crashes involving bikes happens on these rural roads, which are often very windy, bumpy and have many blind bends. Also, many people are still relatively new to riding a motorcycle and perhaps don't realise how easy it is to get into difficulty." Police intend to be more of a presence on the roads in question, in order to discourage dangerous driving.
