The Motorcycle Industry Association (MCI) has welcomed new government figures that show a significant drop in motorcycle user casualties. Though the number of motorcycle users has gone up in the UK, new figures released by the Department for Transport show that motorcycle casualties have continued to fall. Road casualties in 2005 dropped by 20 to 3,201, the information showed, but motorcycle casualty figures dropped by 16, accounting for 80 per cent of the drop in total road casualties. MCI's Craig Carey-Clinch said: "The motorcycle industry, along with riders and government, have been working to create a more motorcycle-friendly road environment for Britain's estimated 1.5 million riders. "The government has responded by publishing a ground-breaking Motorcycle Strategy, the first of its kind in Europe." New motorcycle sales have almost doubled since the 1990s, as more commuters see the two-wheeled vehicles as the best way to avoid congestion. Recently a group of MPs have called on the government to raise awareness of the danger caused to motorcyclists by diesel spills.
