Harley-Davidson is to change its stock symbol to HOG, vernacular for the kind of large, powerful motorcycles that the company is famous for.
Currently Harley-Davidson stock is represented by HDI, which will be replaced by the new moniker on August 15th, the company announced today.
Harley-Davidson is the currently the world most profitable motorcycle manufacturer.
Patrick Healy, who is president of New York-based Issuer Advisory Group, told Bloomberg: "I don't think I've seen anybody pick a better symbol.
"It's unwise to tie your name to something that's not permanent. HOG is a perpetual niche for a long time to come.'
Harley-Davidson was founded in 1903 by long-time friends William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson in Millwaukee, Wisconsin.
Used extensively in World War II, Harley-Davidson motorcycles experienced a sales boom after the war, helped by serviceman who had encountered the bike in the army and wanted one when they returned home.
