Statham performs own motorcycle stunts for 'Crank'

British actor Jason Statham, who has grown to become a leading man of the action genre, is to perform his own motorcycle stunts in his new movie Crank.

One of the scenes involves piloting a motorcycle at full speed through downtown Los Angeles wearing nothing but a hospital gown.

There is also a scene involving a brutal fight with the movie's villain – while hanging outside of a helicopter 3,000 feet above Los Angeles.

Statham said: "The stuntmen asked me a hundred times, 'Are you sure you want to do this?'

"People ask, 'Did you have to train?' How do you train for hanging out of a helicopter? You just go and do it."

An ex-member of the British Olympic diving team, who placed third in the Olympic trials, Statham is an athlete to whom such stunts come naturally.

Crank tells the story of a west coast hitman injected with poison which only gives him hours to live, unless he keeps on moving.
