Valentino Rossi still has a chance to win his sixth MotoGP championship, after finishing third in the Australian Grand Prix.
The 27-year-old Italian was on course to win the race, before a pit-stop to change bikes, forced by rain, cost him his lead.
However Rossi still managed to snatch five points from American Nicky Hayden, who finished the race in fifth and now leads the Rossi by 21 points.
Rossi said: "I'm a little disappointed with third place because I know that in dry conditions we had a very good set-up and I think the result could have been better.
"Anyway, we can't do anything about the weather and in these circumstances I have to be thankful for third place because we have pulled some more points back on Nicky."
The next chance the Italian has to make up points on the "Kentucky Kid" will be at Motegi in the Japanese MotoGP this weekend.
After that Rossi will only have two more chances to make up points, in Portugal and Spain.
