A police force in Barking and Dagenham has set up a scheme to help young people from deprived areas learn about motorcycle maintenance.
The initiative takes the form of weekly workshops run by Mark Riches and is intended to cut incidents of motorbike theft by teaching youngsters about owner responsibility and the problems of riding bikes illegally.
According to Motorcycle News, Mr Riches' company Orbit Training is delivering training sessions to would-be riders about mechanics and they can take advantage of practical lessons on repairing bikes.
"We have a lot of problems with kids riding motorbikes illegally," commented Sergeant Simon Whalley, who launched the programme.
"They're getting them legal and supplying them with bikes cheap on the basis that they complete the course."
He added that the youngsters had little to do on the estates so the workshops were providing them with a sense of purpose and helping them work together as a team.
Meanwhile, Thames Valley Police states that more motorbikes and scooters are stolen in comparison to cars and advises owners to avoid falling victim to thieves by taking steps such as using a combination security lock.
