Motorbikes offered as vigilante reward

Malaysian authorities have come up with a novel way to cut street crime in their country, by offering motorbikes as a reward for catching criminals, according to reports.
The initiative is an effort not only to reduce the amount of crime in Malaysia, but also to limit the prevalence of drive-by purse-grabbings, which have proved to be a thorn in the side of police and politicians in the country for some time.
And since most of these attacks are perpetrated by motorcycle riders with little else to do, the incentive is designed to give those with criminal intentions a more socially responsible drive behind their biking activities, Reuters reports.
"Instead of wasting their time, they might as well help police combat crime," Abdul Azeez, head of the junior wing of the ruling United Malays National Organization party, explained to the Star newspaper.
"Once they catch at least 30 snatch thieves, we will reward them with a motorcycle each as an incentive," he continued.
Malaysia is in south-east Asia, has a population of more than 23 million people and achieved independence from British rule 50 years ago.
