The Assen circuit in the Netherlands, which is to be the location for the ninth round of this year's MotoGP World Championship, is to undergo a number of modifications prior to the race in June.
According to the MotoGP Grand Prix Safety Commission, asphalt extension zones at identified points of the circuit could make the course safer and provide more flexibility for riders should they come off-track.
Examples cited by the commission include Colin Edwards' incident in 2006 when he attempted to outbrake Nicky Hayden but instead entered the asphalt area which enabled him to rejoin the race.
In addition, Valentino Rossi's hand and ankle injuries sustained when he hit the gravel area of the track during a practice session this year may have been avoided if the patch had been covered with asphalt, the commission remarked.
Fans can look forward to the race at Assen on June 30th, while the next round of the championship is due to take place in Istanbul on April 22nd.
