Helmets to get safety ratings

Those who like to treat themselves to kit and accessories regularly might be interested to hear about a new safety rating to be given to all bike helmets in future.
Each lid on the market is to be graded after a range of performance and safety tests, so buyers are aware of what they are getting from each one, transport minister Stephen Ladyman explained to Motorcycle News.
Suggesting it will "transform" the way bikers buy helmets, Dr Ladyman said a full list of all ratings is scheduled to be in place by next spring.
"We've done our research and we believe that we can save 50 bikers' lives a year if they were to wear helmets of a higher safety standard," he told the motorcycling website. "We will be scoring helmets purely on how safe they are."
Dr Ladyman is responsible for a number of parliamentary issues which may be applicable to the motorbike industry, including road safety, vehicles and fuels.
