Gresini Honda rider Toni Elias suffered a broken leg during Thursday's free practice session at Assen in the Netherlands, ruling him out of this weekend's MotoGP race.
Elias, who missed both the 2005 and 2006 races through injury, fractured his femur as he lost control of his bike and skidded into a gravel trap.
The Spaniard was carried from the scene of the crash by stretcher before being taken to Assen Hospital and is now unlikely to race again until the competition reaches the Czech Republic in August.
The unlucky rider moved to the Gresini team after racing for Fortuna Honda in the 2006 season.
During the first day of practice, championship leader Casey Stoner registered the fastest lap time in his quest to win his sixth race since joining the Ducati team.
On the Kawaski, Randy de Puniet recorded the second-fastest time followed by last year's champion Nicky Hayden on the Repsol Honda.
