Motorcyclists to protest potential congestion charges

Plans are in place for a mass motorcycle ride-out in London on October 20th to campaign for the exclusion of motorcycles from congestion charges.
The Ride for Rights campaign aims to challenge plans to include motorcycles in congestion charges, which could see riders facing national pay-as-you-go-style charges to use roads.
Some ten regions given government funding to develop road pricing plans - aimed to reduce congestion - may all end up including motorcycles in the road charges, according to Motorcycle News.
Policy director for the Motorcycle Industry Association Craig Carey-Clinch expressed concerns that the schemes could result in motorcycles being included in any future pay-as-you-go-style national road pricing plans.
Each of the ten government-funded regions is expected to submit plans for their congestion charges to the Department for Transport to gain extra funding. This will allow them to put the schemes into effect. The earliest schemes are expected to be in place by 2012.
The London campaign will pass through Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.
According to Transport for London, each weekday morning the equivalent of 25 motorway lanes of traffic attempts to drive into the centre of the capital.
