Some two-thirds of motorbike crashes are caused by other drivers, according to leading motorcycle insurance provider Carole Nash.
A survey by the insurer suggested that over 66 per cent of motorbike accidents are not caused by the insured biker but by other road users, Motorcycle News reports.
The study also found that riders of lower-power vehicles such as mopeds and scooters were among those at greatest danger.
In a statement, the firm added that inexperienced bikers, younger riders and those with zero no-claims bonus were also at high risk.
Operations director of Carole Nash Dave Bowcock told Motorcycle News: "It's time action was taken to ensure much greater emphasis is placed on motorcycle awareness in the driver training and testing regime."
Last month, Halifax Travel Insurance advised British holidaymakers to ensure they hire vehicles from reputable firms when abroad and to make sure they wear helmets if renting a motorcycle.
