Dogs and cats are piling on the pounds over the Christmas period, meaning more and more need expensive veterinary treatment, warns a new report. Just like their human owners, the UK's moggies and pooches are indulging a little too much over the festive period, as their owners are guilty of stuffing them with seasonal food and treats. However, experts warn that there are serious health issues resulting from obesity amongst animals, meaning expensive veterinary treatment for animals not covered by quality pet insurance. More than 81 per cent of animal physiotherapists claimed obesity is the number one danger facing dogs in the UK today, blaming owners for not taking care of the pets' health. Life Style Extra quoted an RSPCA spokesman saying: "Overeating is one of the major problems facing pets in Britain today, along with welfare issues and neglect. "According to research we have carried out, about 30 per cent of pets in this country are overweight." Overweight pets often need treatment from vets and animal physiotherapists to help them regain a safe and healthy weight, as well as countering the effects of stress and damages to the heart, liver, lungs, kidney and joints of their animals. As well as limiting pets' eating over the Christmas period to a normal amount, experts suggest making pet owners shop around for the cheapest pet insurance deals, to help cover their animals if the do need to get back into shape over the new year.
