Presents outdo pet insurance this Christmas

New research has revealed that an increasing number of pet owners would rather spend money on novelty toys and gifts for their pets than on pet insurance. Despite seeing pets as 'one of the family', the majority of pet owners are more tempted by gimmicky presents such as Santa outfits or squeaky toys, than by covering their animals with adequate health care. A survey carried out by ICM on behalf of esure found that UK pet owners spend an average of £10 on their dogs at Christmas and £5 on their cats. Jacky Brown, head of Pet Insurance at esure, said: "Many people see their dogs and cats as members of the family rather than just pets and will be letting them join in with the family festivities this Christmas. "Instead of a squeaky snowman bone or novelty jingle bell collar that will be used a few times and put away to gather dust for the rest of the year, a more worthwhile stocking filler for a beloved pooch or moggie this Christmas would be pet insurance." Just six per cent of those surveyed said that they planned on giving their animals pet insurance as a Christmas present.
