Public ignoring 'pet is for life' message

A new survey from the RSPCA suggests that many people in the UK are ignoring the idea that a pet is for life, not just for Christmas. Research carried out by the animal welfare charity found that there exists a worrying lack of understanding among many people over how to properly care for their pets. Some of the more bizarre examples of excuses given by pet owners for failing to look after their pets included in the research are: "My cat doesn't match the new carpet" and "I'm going on holiday". During the first 12 days of December this year alone, the RSPCA revealed that it received 492 calls relating to abandoned animals. For those people who do decide to give a pet as a Christmas present, they are urged to take out pet insurance so that they can ensure the animal will be well cared-for in the new year and beyond, should it become ill or injured.
