Pet insurance 'vital' for jet-set pets

More pets are travelling around the world than ever before, but many are not covered by adequate pet insurance, it has been claimed. International airline Virgin Atlantic's "Flying Paws" scheme has attracted 596 dogs and 402 cats recently, as owners are finding it harder to leave their pets at home and easier to take them away with them. The airline has carried over 3,000 animals since 2003, following the widespread acceptance of pet passports. But pet owners are still being urged to take out pet insurance for their beloved companions, in case they get injured, ill or even lost. Over Christmas especially pets are being spoilt by their owners, treated to such delights as dog-sized T-shirts and golden name tags. With Virgin Atlantic's Flying Paws 'air miles' club, the more time dogs and cats spend on a plane, the more lavish the gift they receive from blow dries and pedicures to Prada and Gucci clothing. Pet air fares are becoming increasing popular, but animal owners looking for the cheapest pet insurance deals are encouraged to search online, and to make sure their canine or feline companion is suitably covered for its jet-set lifestyle.
