Holidaying pets need pet insurance too

The hazards of travelling are difficult to predict at the best of times, but travelling with a companion of the furry kind can simply add another layer of stress, worry and financial hardship. For this reason, travellers are encouraged to prepare as much of their travel arrangements as possible, including taking out adequate pet insurance. Since the introduction of the PETS travel scheme, increasing numbers of people are taking their pets on holiday. Pets are registered with the Pets travel scheme and are implanted with a microchip and given a blood test to confirm they are rabies-free. This then entitles owners to take pets to EU and some non-EU destinations without the need for quarantine on their return. However, owners are reminded that the further a pet travels, the more likely it is to have an accident. Defra has provided details of the airlines and routes that pets are allowed to travel on, but they are entitled to refuse to transport a pet if there are concerns about its condition, or insist that pets are transported in the hold. In the latter case particularly, owners must ensure they have adequate pet insurance, or face costly bills for whatever ailment their pet has picked up along the way.
