Petometer to reduce obesity and pet insurance premiums

Petplan, a leading provider of pet insurance is launching a 'Petometer' in order to measure the number of steps a dog takes during the day. The product launch is in response to the obesity epidemic that is ravaging the UK's canine population. More than four in ten of the nation's dogs are considered to be obese, with many of the same associated problems that Humans encounter. Vets are treating increasing numbers of dogs with ailments such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver problems and osteoarthritis, with Petplan alone paying out £7 million to cover these ailments in 2004. As a result, Petplan has launched the Petometer, the first device of its kind to count accurately the number of steps a dog takes every day. The device is attached unobtrusively to the dog's collar and uses an electronic sensor to record the movement of the front legs. It is believed that the device will show owners precisely how little exercise their dog is getting every day, and encourage them to provide more opportunities for exercise. But in addition to extending Rover's life span, owners may also reap the financial rewards of a fit and healthy pet. Dogs of a healthy weight will be cheaper to insure, while fewer claims on their pet insurance will likely result in lower premiums.
