Treating pets risks pet insurance cover

While most pet owners treat their furry friend as a member of the family, owners are being reminded that they have different needs to the rest of the family, and so should be treated accordingly. A new survey by Halifax Pet Insurance revealed that over six million dog owners have fed their pets potentially lethal confectionery chocolate, leading 79 per cent of UK vets to regard pet owners' understanding of what foods to give their pet as poor or worse. This ignorance has seen a dramatic rise in the number of vets reporting pets requiring treatment for ailments resulting from consuming human foods. Nearly 90 per cent of vets had seen an increase in such cases, with a third citing chocolate and sugary snacks as the biggest culprits, a quarter naming left-overs and a further 17 per cent citing dairy products. However, it is not just the physical impact such ignorance can have on the family dog, but the financial impact it can have on the whole family. Feeding pets damaging foods may invalidate pet insurance policies, leaving the unlucky family with some tough decisions should their dog become ill. John Bennett, head of products at Halifax Insurance, said: "It is important that pet owners understand that many human foods are potentially toxic to animals. Owners should always consult their vet if they are unsure about which foods they can feed their animals. "Pet owners should be especially vigilant over Easter when chocolate is often more accessible for pets around the home. If dogs or cats consume confectionary chocolate pet owners could find themselves exposed to significant veterinary bills, or in extreme cases lose their pet."
