Owners reminded to insure their 'children'

Nearly half of all UK pet owners treat their furry friend like one of their own children, but remarkably only half of these have bothered to take out insurance to protect their hairy offspring. Research by Saga Pet Insurance revealed that two in five respondents prefer the company of their pet to other humans, with a fifth of owners planning to leave money to their pet in their will. This was an attitude more common among the older generation, with 48 per cent of the over 50s planning to leave their pet a cash windfall. Given this level of commitment to our faithful friends it is particularly surprising that a mere 20 per cent of UK pets have insurance. If a child was sick money would be no option, but for pets unless treatment can be paid for owners may be left with the unpalatable choice of letting their loved one go. Andrew Goodsell, chief executive of Saga, said: "We know that, for many, the company of a beloved cat or dog can really make a difference to their quality of life. However, it's important that people seriously consider taking out insurance to cover their pet in case of an accident or illness." Owners who see their pets as their children are particularly at risk if they do not have pet insurance. Veterinary bills can be unmercifully expensive, so to protect the nation's pets as far as possible, owners are urged to shop around online for comprehensive pet insurance.
