Exotic pet insurance available

Though pet insurance plans for dogs and cats are relatively easy to come by, those for more exotic animals have been a little thinner on the ground, until recently. Choices for insuring an exotic animal, such as a snake or bird, are rapidly increasing, according to the Times. Petplan teamed up with Exotic Direct in May to provide insurance for birds, reptiles and large mammals, with the policies being underwritten by insurance giant Allianz Cornhill. Fiona Pinkney, of Petplan, told the Times: "Exotic animals are often the most expensive pets. As well as the purchase price, they have specialist requirements, so vets bills can be higher." The most expensive exotic pet kept in the UK, is a white macaw, valued at £50,000, the newspaper reported. Recently Sainsbury's performed a survey which found that many pet insurance policies were inadequate, with only a six per cent providing the necessary amount of cover.
