Most dogs in the UK – 80 per cent - do not receive enough exercise, according to a survey by Halifax.
And one in ten dog owners do not know how much exercise their breed of dog requires in the first place, the survey of 1,000 dog owners discovered.
Most dogs only get approximately 50 per cent of their required exercise level, the survey discovered.
Vicky Watson, products manager at Halifax Pet Insurance said: "The research reveals a general lack of education and awareness of exercise requirements of pets amongst dog owners.
"When choosing a dog an owner should properly research the breed to ensure that they will be able to provide it with the care and attention it needs."
However, despite the statistics, only 15 per cent of dog owners believe that they under-exercise their pets.
The Labrador, Britain's most popular breed of dog, needs at least two hours of exercise per day, according to Halifax.
When buying a dog, potential owners must consider carefully the size and nature of the dog and whether it is congruent with their own lifestyle and nature, advise the UK Kennel Club.
