Music 'could help pets through firework season'

The Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Kimpton intends to help cats and dogs through the fireworks season by playing music to them in the evenings.
In an attempt to drown out the loud noises, cats and dogs at the centre will be treated to music and covered windows to reduce flashing lights caused by the festivities.
According to the Blue Cross, cats and dogs have very acute hearing and loud bangs or whistles may cause them actual pain in their ears. The Kimpton centre will also try to desensitise puppies and kittens to the noises by playing them taped recordings of firework noises.
"Stress signs to look out for are an animal yawning and licking its lips, appearing agitated or destructive towards household items, trying to dig or get under furniture and constant whining, barking or meowing," said Kimpton centre manager Lynda Campbell.
A leaflet produced by the Blue Cross also advises pet owners not to increase their animal's stress levels by shouting at it and also to walk dogs earlier in the day before fireworks start.
According to insureyourpet.co.uk, pet insurance claims are more likely than home or car insurance claims.
