Pet owners in Britain spend £3.5 billion on their loved ones each year, although only one in seven has pet insurance, it has emerged.
In new research by swiftcover.com, which provides car insurance online, the average cost of taking a pet to the vet is £230.
Therefore, the insurance provider is urging owners to invest in a cover plan for their pets, in order to avoid any unexpected and potentially costly medical care bills.
"We're a nation that's renowned for our love of our pets," said chief executive officer, Andrew Blowers.
"Having adequate cover in place to protect against any unforeseen circumstances is absolutely vital for responsible pet owners."
Common features of pet insurance policies can include cover for the price of vets' fees, a reward or advertising if a pet goes missing or maintenance bills if the owner is ill and unable to take care of the animal.
