Pet owners are being alerted to news from the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), which warns that pets could experience "unusual injuries" this Christmas.
Without sufficient pet insurance, owners could finds themselves faced with potentially costly veterinary bills if their loved one is hurt over the festive season.
The PDSA states that some of the most common injuries suffered by pets are electrocution, chocolate poisoning or wounds caused by baubles falling on to a pet's head.
"I have seen all sorts of festive injuries during my career," remarked Elaine Pendlebury, senior veterinary surgeon for the PDSA.
"By trying to ensure that a pet's home is as safe as possible owners can make sure their pets enjoy Christmas as much as people," she continued.
Owners are therefore being advised to take extra care with decorations and other household appliances that could potentially cause danger for a pet.
Many pet insurance policies offer cover in the event of an animal needing short or long-term medial attention.
