Fat pets 'have shorter lives'

Household pets which are overweight are likely to die younger than those at the recommended weight, it has been claimed.
In news that could be of interest to those considering pet insurance, research from Halifax has found that fat pets have a higher chance of developing diabetes, arthritis and heart disease.
And with 37 per cent of Britain's pets being overweight, 82 per cent of vets across the country have set up clinics to give owners advice and help get their pet to the recommended weight.
Vicky Watson, spokesperson for Halifax Pet Insurance, said that many pets have been given treats over the Christmas period, resulting in weight gain.
She commented: "It's important that [owners] offset this by increased exercise, or the introduction of stricter portion sizes in January.
"Owners that are concerned about their animal's weight should visit their local vet who can deliver specialist dietary advice."
Pet insurance policies often cover veterinary fees in addition to a number of check-ups and vaccinations a pet may need to stay healthy.
