Owning a pedigree 'more expensive than cross-breed'

Those looking to ensure their pet's health with a pet insurance policy may be interested in news that owning a pedigree dog or cat can cost more than a cross-breed.
According to Sainsbury's Bank, a pedigree can incur spending of up to 34 per cent more than a cross-breed, due to long-term hereditary conditions that a pure breed might experience.
Indeed, the bank found that veterinary fees caused the biggest increase in spending, with the average spend for a pedigree dog being £537 per year compared to £430 for a mongrel.
Steve Johnson, head of pet insurance at the supermarket lender, said that it might be a good idea for owners to arrange pet insurance for a puppy or kitten soon after they acquire the animal.
"Select a policy which provides adequate levels of long term cover," he suggested. "Once a condition becomes apparent it may be impossible to get it covered under a new policy."
In addition to pet insurance, Sainsbury's Bank also offers products such as car insurance and home insurance.
