DfT: British motorists speeding less in built-up areas

Britain's drivers are speeding less, according to new figures released by the Department for Transport (DfT) today.
During 2006, 49 per cent of drivers on 30 mph built-up roads exceeded the speed limit, the report states.
This figure compares to the 65 per cent of motorists who drove faster than the maximum speed on this type of road in 2001 and the 72 per cent of drivers who sped in 1996, the DfT indicates.
Motorists who are caught exceeding the speed limit can be issued with points on their licences, which can consequently lead to higher car insurance premiums in years to come.
Further findings from the survey show that 54 per cent of motorway-travelling cars broke the national speed restriction, which constitutes a two per cent reduction on last year's figures.
Speeding is not the only crime which can lead to driving licence penalty points and subsequent motor insurance hikes - driving when drunk and using a car when uninsured can also have the same effect.
