Use specific pet products, says expert

Owners could be putting their animals at risk by not using the correct pet products, claims a leading expert.

Dr Steven Hansen, senior vice president of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Centre, is advising all owners to ensure that only cat medication is given to cats and that they should never been treated with products designed for dogs.

The Albany Democrat Herald reports that some people could be using over-the-counter flea treatments on their cats despite being called labelled for dogs only.

"Misuse of flea and tick products can be extremely harmful or even deadly to our companion animals," explained Dr Hansen.

He added: "By taking the time to read a product label carefully, a pet owner could save their animal’s life."

Purchasing adequate pet insurance is also a valuable way for animal owners to ensure their pets remain in the best of health.

Insurance can help cover the cost of treatment if they are involved in an accident or become ill and means that owners can focus on caring for their animals rather than struggling to meet costly vet bills.
