Pet insurance is "very important"

It is very important for owners to purchase pet insurance, an expert in the sector has suggested today.

Mark Johnston, a public relations officer for the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA), explained that the rising cost of medical treatments could mean owners face a "major problem" if they do not have adequate pet insurance in place.

He said prices for procedures such as x-rays and operations can run into the thousands, making it of particular importance that pet lovers cover their domestic animals.

"The biggest acute costs or sudden onset costs would be some sort of major orthopaedic surgery," Mr Johnston continued.

"[Pet insurance is] particularly important as far as veterinary fees are concerned."

The BSAVA works to promote high educational and scientific standards in various areas of small animal research.
