'Over one in ten' has a guard dog

Some 11 per cent of households have a guard dog as part of their burglary prevention methods, new research has discovered.
In addition to security lights and CCTV cameras, over one-tenth of homeowners use their pet pooch to keep an eye out for thieves, the survey by Cornhill Direct found.
And while a dog may seem like a way to counteract intruders, a pet insurance policy may be a necessary purchase to prevent a payout should the canine be injured.
As well as covering regular medical check-ups, various pet insurance policies provide cover for emergency care should this be needed.
"We believe that people can help reduce their fear of being a victim of crime by improving the level of security in and around their homes," said Cornhill Direct's David Keel.
While some dogs may bark if an uninvited guest should approach a home, it might not be wise to fully rely on this as a security measure.
