Celebrity warned after buying dog

A celebrity who might be looking for a pet insurance policy this week is Britney Spears, who recently purchased a $3,000 (£1,464) Yorkshire Terrier from a Los Angeles store.

The singer, who also has two children, may have been looking for a companion for the dogs she already owns.

However, animal welfare organisation the Humane Society of the United States has warned the star to take more care when choosing a pet, after reports said Ms Spears chose the puppy on a whim and did not spend long in the shop.

"Choosing a dog is a major lifestyle decision that should not be taken lightly," said the group's spokesperson Stephanie Swain.

Those who are considering the purchase of a pet may benefit from buying pet insurance when the animal is still in its infancy, as this may mean the owner can receive short and long-term benefits of a cover policy.
