Pet obesity is a 'serious problem'

Although giving snacks and treats to pets is all part of the fun of owning one, a pet insurance firm has warned that obesity is now a serious problem affecting over a third of the UK's cats and dogs.
According to Sainsbury's Pet Insurance, some 2.72 million pooches and 2.87 million moggies are obese, meaning they may require more medical attention and treatment than others due to the health risks related to being overweight.
Indeed, pets who tip the scales at an obese level can suffer from problems such as diabetes and osteoarthritis - two conditions which would need long-term veterinary care, the company's manager Claire Moyles said.
"Their life expectancy can also be reduced dramatically," she added.
Ways to reduce a pet's weight could include taking them for regular exercise and cutting out all snacks between meals.
Anyone concerned that their furry friend may be obese may want to take them for a trip to the vet and consider buying pet insurance for future care.
