Pet insurance is vital, says insurer

The cost of veterinary fees and medical treatments mean that pet insurance is a "vitally important" purchase, it has been suggested.
Carmel McCarthy, PR manager of Direct Line, claimed that pet owners could end up spending a fortune if they do not ensure adequate cover for their loved ones.
According to Ms McCarthy, pet insurance is important as medical and maintenance costs are rising - making it a potentially costly affair should a pet fall ill or be injured.
"If you spend a lot of money on your pet, it's worth spending the extra few pounds on pet insurance," she continued. "It's vitally important that you have pet insurance."
Although regular check-ups may be within many owners' budgets, Ms McCarthy noted that even "basic" things can end up costing thousands.
She said that if a dog's leg breaks, even the x-rays needed to scan it could total "a few hundred pounds".
The RSPCA recently commented on a similar issue, suggesting that buying pet insurance is one of the main aspects of being a responsible pet owner.
