Firm launches rent-a-pet scheme

A company is offering the chance to own a share in a dog to people who cannot look after a pet full-time. California-based FlexPetz enables its members to part-own their chosen canine which they can visit and take out for walks at pre-arranged times, reports the Scotsman. Membership charges cover pet insurance costs as well as boarding fees and the firm has revealed plans to open a branch in London. The enterprise's founder Marlena Cervantes asserted that FlexPetz "prevents dogs from being adopted and then returned to the shelter by people who realise it wasn't a good fit". In addition, the behavioural therapist said the firm's members tend to be individuals who recognise that taking on a dog full-time would be unfair to the pet. As well as offering dogs which are covered by pet insurance, Flexpetz has a number of canines available which are trained therapy dogs.
