Brits 'see pets as an extension of themselves'

Pet insurance customers may be intrigued to hear that Brits often see their animals as an extension of themselves, according to the Cambridge Evening News.
This is why owners sometimes spend a lot of money on their furry friends, in addition to the other costs involved with owning a pet.
The newspaper said people liked to buy designer dog leads, exotic toys and expensive collars - although it claimed that "you're actually buying these for yourself more than your pet".
More importantly however, the article claimed that vet bills can be more expensive than any other element of pet ownership "so make sure you take out insurance".
It also recommended reading the small print of any pet insurance policy, as things like spaying, vaccinations and flea control may or may not be covered dependent on what type of cover is provided.
Related news this week saw Sainsbury's Bank claim that pet owners were now more comfortable buying their insurance online.
The company's communications manager Natasha Virtue said the provider had seen an increase in the number of consumers using the internet for this purpose.
