Protect cats and dogs from the heat, says HSUS

A US pet organisation has issued tips to dog and cat owners on making sure their loved ones stay protected during the summer months.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) primarily suggests ensuring a pet has adequate shade and water, as heatstroke can affect animals and could result in medical costs and a pet insurance claim.
Plenty of cool and fresh water is essential whenever a pet is outdoors, while providing some kind of shelter from the heat is a must too.
Limiting exercise on a hot day is also a good idea; HSUS recommends limiting walks to early evening or morning when the sun is not as strong. It is important to also remember that some surfaces can heat up and burn pet's paws if they are exercised in very hot temperatures.
In addition, recognising the signs of heatstroke are also crucial, according to HSUS. Heavy panting, a rapid heartbeat, increased salivation and glazed eyes are just some of the symptoms associated with this condition, which can be extremely distressing for a pet.
HSUS is the largest animal protection organisation in the States, while UK pets often receive support from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
