Pet owners advised to 'think long-term'

Getting a pet could be a serious financial liability if new owners do not consider all the risks and think long-term, it has been claimed.
Dogs in particular can be expected to live for around 15 years and in that time are likely to suffer a variety of accidents and illnesses that can be expensive to deal with.
Moreover, a pet owner's life situation can also be expected to change dramatically over such a long period.
This is particularly important for retired and older people, warned Anne Springer of SeniorCare.
Writing in the Gloucester Times newspaper, Ms Springer said: "Veterinary expenses often come as a shock to older owners on fixed incomes. The cost of these services has skyrocketed, largely due to technical advances and use of the same diagnostic techniques and equipment used in diagnosing human conditions."
Pet insurance is widely available from a variety of providers and is relatively inexpensive when compared to the costs of many major veterinary procedures.
