Pet insurance could provide "reassurance" and "lessen heartache" for pet owners, the Pet Care Trust announced today.
Spokesperson for the national charity Alexandra Baker stated that pet insurance is recommended due to the possibility of costly veterinary bills and the fact that there is "no NHS for pets" to deal with any illnesses a pet my develop or accidents they may be involved in.
Ms Baker added that it is advisable to insure pets from a young age in order to maintain premiums at a lower level as older animals may be more costly to acquire cover for in much the same way as humans getting health insurance.
The Pet Care Trust promotes pet care education and responsible pet ownership.
Research carried out recently by Sainsbury's Bank indicated that protecting pedigree animals with adequate pet insurance is even more important due to the cost of owning a pedigree pet costing up to 34 per cent more than a cross-breed.
