Cat owners 'should take out pet insurance regardless of their animal's age'

Posted : 31-08-2007

Owners of cats should ensure they take out adequate pet insurance irrespective of the age of their feline, according to Cats Protection.

Head of veterinary services for the national charity Maggie Roberts said that having a pet undergo treatment or an operation was "upsetting enough" without the added financial encumbrance of paying for it.

Ms Roberts added that even the most well cared for animals can be involved in freak accidents or develop illnesses unexpectedly, adding that debts can quickly mount up when hospitalisation, surgery or referral to an expert is required.

A report on UK pet insurance in 2006 by financial research firm Defaqto stated that only 17 per cent of cats and 32 per cent of dogs were protected.

Cats Protection was established in 1927 and aims to re-home some 55,000 cats and kittens on an annual basis through a network of 252 branches and 29 adoption centres.
