Britain is 'barking mad' for its perfect pets

Some 1.5 million homes in Britain are ruled over by a "boss dog" or "top cat", according to new research carried out by Halifax Pet Insurance.
Animals in such homes are able to dictate when and what they eat, the time they sleep and the amount of exercise they take.
The study also suggests that some 1.1 million British consumers prepare a fresh meal for their animal as they believe it is superior to tins while over 650,000 people claimed to cook for their pet more often than they do for a partner or family members.
Consumers should ensure that their animal eats a healthy diet and takes regular exercise to avoid potentially pricey veterinary bills or claims on their pet insurance.
Products manager at Halifax Pet Insurance Vicky Watson commented: "It's easy to see why the pet is regarded as just as important in the family as they can offer a great deal of companionship and affection."
Pet insurance is available from a wide range of providers and often proves less costly than many veterinary bills.
