Location and housing affects pet insurance premiums, says Allianz

A number of factors including age, breed, value, activity and location affect the cost of pet insurance premiums, according to a leading provider.
Risk and underwriting manager for Allianz's Petplan programme Clare Wheatley stated that age is a factor as animals - like humans - may develop conditions such as diabetes or arthritis in later life.
Breed is taken into account as "cross-breeds are hardier" than their pedigree counterparts.
The location of a pet is also considered as the cost of setting up and running a veterinary practice "can vary greatly across the UK" and this may be reflected in the cost of treatment should an animal require it.
Ms Wheatley added that where an animal is housed may also factor into premium costs, using the example of a parrot kept in a kitchen being at greater risk due to the bird's intolerance of Teflon often used in cookware.
Datamonitor's 2006 UK pet insurance report noted that following the success of Sainsbury's and Tesco in selling pet insurance stories, a number of other retailers have launched similar services in the market.
