Flabby tabby to join pet fit club

A fat cat from Liverpool is among eight overweight animals chosen to take part in a pet fit club being run by national pet charity PDSA.
George, an eight-kilo cat, joins a group including a 23 kg spaniel, two overweight Labradors and a 46 per cent overweight Chihuahua.
With a combined weight of 175 kg, the pets will take part in a 100-day fitness and diet programme to help slim them down, the charity explains.
Pets that are overweight risk developing illnesses that could require costly veterinary procedures and as such it may be advisable for animal lovers to invest in comprehensive pet insurance to make sure that any unforeseen bills can be covered.
Senior veterinary surgeon Elaine Pendlebury comments: "The aim of PDSA Pet Fit Club is to highlight ways in which owners can improve their pet's health. Safe weight-loss is possible for pets - it just takes a little time, dedication and patience."
Recently, PDSA urged pet owners to make sure that their animals are warm enough this winter so that they are less at risk from conditions such as hypothermia.
